Fried meatballs & mashed potatoes is a fun twist on a super traditional dish. We LOVE mashed potatoes it’s a great winter side dish we eat a lot of. So we wanted to have some fun and mix things up by frying our meatballs instead of baking them like we normally do.
We know fried foods are not the most healthy food in the world, so we try and get our fix at home where we can control the type of oil and ingredients we are using. At first we were trying to make full sized meatballs, but this was not getting the inside cooked all the way. After some trial and error we made little bite sized meatballs that were much easier to deep fry. The second time we made them we also froze the rolled out meat balls before rolling them in egg, breadcrumbs and tossing into the fryer.
We definitely recommend topping this appetizer with some homemade gravy, or white sauce. If you are trying to up your food presentation game, or serving fried meatballs and mashed potatoes at a party we have a great trick for getting beautiful looking mashed potatoes. The trick is quite simple, let the potatoes cool then on parchment paper lined baking dish pipe your potatoes using a large star tip. Heat the oven to 200F and warm up the potatoes for 15 minutes just before serving. This will give the potato a twice baked crust on the outside, that is absolutely delicious.
